Best of Beauty 2024 – Part 1

Each year, I have the privilege of testing the latest beauty launches, comparing their claims with real results, and experimenting with how they interact. It's an ongoing process that allows me to sift through the noise and highlight the true standouts. Welcome to the Best of Beauty 2024 – Part 1. There have been so many, my dear reader, that I had to split them up!

For this first part, I'm focusing on complexion products—the foundation (literally) of any makeup look. These items are presented in the order they should be applied, not ranked, as each of them shines in its own right. While I originally received these through promotional channels, I’ve already repurchased several and they’ve earned a permanent place in my beauty roster.

MAC Cosmetics – Hyper Real Serumizer

Let’s start with a history lesson. In the 90s, MAC introduced the revolutionary Hyper Real Foundation—a radiant, reflective product that was way ahead of its time (Charlotte Tilbury would approve!). Fast-forward to today, and MAC has revived the Hyper Real name for a new range of skincare, all designed to give your skin the glow of your dreams.

The standout for me is the Hyper Real Serumizer, a serum-moisturizer hybrid that retexturizes, balances, and strengthens the skin’s barrier. It leaves you with a silky-smooth, radiant complexion that makes makeup application effortless. This formula boasts powerhouse ingredients like niacinamide, cholesterol, and ceramides, along with a blend of acids (salicylic, lactic, and glycolic) that keep skin luminous and blemish-free.

Best of Beauty 2024- Part 1

This hybrid product will smooth out any skin and soften any texture, hydration magic in a bottle.

With its instant smoothing and plumping effect, this product is quickly becoming a staple in my kit. Whether you're dealing with texture or dryness, Hyper Real Serumizer will elevate your complexion game—trust me on this.

Caliray – So Blown Clean Blurring Primer with Collagen Peptides

If you know me, you know I’m not a fan of the "Clean Beauty" trend. It’s often more about fearmongering than efficacy. But Caliray's So Blown Clean Blurring Primer with Collagen Peptides managed to win me over.

Best of Beauty 2024 - Part 1

I was completely blown away by how efficiently this primer eliminated the unwanted texture on my skin!

This silicone-free primer glides on like a gel-cream, instantly blurring and mattifying without drying out the skin. Plus, it's packed with skincare benefits and won’t clog your pores or trigger breakouts. I initially overlooked this product when it landed in my PR pile, but after a glowing recommendation from a trusted YouTuber, I gave it another shot. I’m now on my second tube!

It works well with any foundation type—cream, liquid, or powder—and delivers a smooth, soft-focus finish. It’s definitely one to add to your arsenal.

Charlotte Tilbury – Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint Hydrating Foundation Stick

This one’s been polarizing. Charlotte Tilbury’s Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint has people divided—some love it for its innovation, while others think it’s a greasy nightmare. So, who's right?

I’d say the best way to describe it is: Hollywood Flawless Filter in stick form. It’s hydrating, reflective, and glides effortlessly across the skin, giving a dewy finish. The blurring properties help avoid emphasizing unwanted texture, which is rare for such a luminous product.

Best of Beauty 2024 -Part 1

This controversial launch will give you the glow, any goddess would envy you for.

This is perfect for those with normal to dry skin. If you have oily or combination skin, you’ll want to use it sparingly in areas where oils tend to gather. If you’re looking for glow, this is your product. If you're after matte or satin, look elsewhere!

MAKE UP FOR EVER – HD Skin Setting Powder

As someone with combination-oily skin (and a veteran of drag makeup!), I’ve tested more loose powders than I can count, and I know a good one when I see it. MAKE UP FOR EVER rarely disappoints, and their new HD Skin Setting Powder is no exception.

Set your face like a dream, a blurring dream.

This talc-free, ultra-fine powder blurs imperfections and sets foundation without flattening the skin’s natural luminosity. It comes in a wide range of shades, making it ideal for all complexions. Whether you prefer a puff, brush, or sponge, this powder delivers a smooth, flawless finish every time.

Available in both full and mini sizes, it’s perfect for both makeup artists and beauty enthusiasts who need something travel-friendly. It’s safe to say this powder is a new staple in my kit.

Saie – Glowy Super Gel Multipurpose Illuminator

Last but not least, the Glowy Super Gel by Saie has been a favorite of mine for a while, and for good reason. It’s incredibly versatile—use it under foundation, mixed into it, or on its own for an effortless glow. It dries quickly, is lightweight, and hydrates while giving you that coveted dewy finish.

Best of Beauty 2024 - Part 1

Endless glow on the skin that hydrates and illuminates you for hours.

The latest shade, Roseglow, is a gorgeous rose-gold that flatters any skin tone, giving a stunning wet-look sheen. Whether you're looking to elevate a glamorous look or add a sun-kissed touch, this illuminator won’t let you down. It’s an essential for bridal, natural, or full-glam looks alike. Shine on, baby!

Hopefully, this curated selection helps guide you to a complexion that radiates confidence and beauty. Remember, you define your own beauty—and you are beautiful just as you are. Until next time!

How to Build Your Skincare Routine

Whenever I am around skincare newbies, I always get asked, “How do you build a skincare routine?”

The skincare world is filled with a dizzying array of products, brands, ingredients, and promotional claims. It can become overwhelming to figure out where to start and how to navigate the sea of options.

I’ve had a skincare routine for over 35 years, and it has evolved as my skin’s needs have changed, and as my understanding of ingredients and layering has grown. I’ve become a skincare nerd, a lover of self-care, and a firm believer in the well-deserved me-time spent with my skin.

My love of skincare has led me to develop a truly elaborate routine that covers all bases for my skin’s needs. I adapt it as needed, and I have entirely different routines for day and night. However, I’m aware that most people prefer a more streamlined approach, which is why I often suggest simplified routines. These routines are designed to improve the skin’s overall health while protecting it from environmental damage, free radicals, and daily exposure to pollution.

The 3 Basic Steps

Step 1: Cleanse

The first step in any routine is cleansing. Regardless of your skin type, your skin sheds dead cells, which can accumulate on the surface. Cleansing is essential to remove dirt, bacteria, and impurities.

You should cleanse your face twice a day: once in the morning to remove oils, sweat, and any bed residue, and again in the evening to wash away makeup, sunscreen, pollution, and exposure to the elements.

In the morning, most dermatologists and estheticians recommend a gentle cleanse with something like micellar water or a milk cleanser. In the evening, a double cleanse is highly recommended. The first cleanse removes the surface grime, while the second ensures that any remaining product is thoroughly removed, which is important to prevent clogged pores and breakouts.

For the first cleanse at night, you can use micellar water or a milk cleanser, followed by a gel-type cleanser to dislodge any tenacious pigments or residue hiding in your pores.

Pro Tip: Every cleanser, even micellar water, must be rinsed off. Failure to do so simply moves dirt around the face and allows it to settle into your pores.

Step 2: Moisturize

Moisturizing is a must for all skin types. Most moisturizers on the market today include active ingredients that help improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance.

Moisturizers come in various textures, from gel to cream. Those with drier skin may prefer thicker creams, while oilier skin types will gravitate toward lighter, gel-based formulas. Your choice of moisturizer may also change with the seasons—lighter products in warmer weather, and richer ones in colder months.

When applying moisturizer, use upward motions on your face and gentle downward strokes on your neck, extending the product down to your chest. And for the ladies, don’t forget the décolletage!

Step 3: Sun Protection

Sun protection is crucial for daytime. Sunscreen protects your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. I recommend using a sunscreen with SPF 50, which offers the highest level of protection. Apply it 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours while outdoors.

Not all sunscreens are created equal. Some have fluid textures that leave a luminous finish, while others are thicker and may even double as a makeup primer. Choose one that suits your preference and skin needs.

Fragrance

Fragrance does nothing to hydrate or benefit the skin; it is added purely for sensory pleasure. Since companies aren’t required to disclose the ingredients in their fragrance blends, I prefer to avoid fragrance in most skincare products.

While I enjoy fragrance as a separate entity, I typically avoid spraying it directly onto my skin. Instead, I spray it onto my clothes to minimize contact. The only skincare product where I don’t mind fragrance is in cleansers, as they are rinsed off and the contact is minimal.

Alcohol

While I don’t want to spend too much time vilifying ingredients, I do strongly advise avoiding alcohol, especially denatured alcohol. This ingredient can dry out the skin and promote oxidation, which can cause long-term damage at a cellular level.

Many expensive creams are filled with it, and while some claim it evaporates before reaching the skin, I would avoid it whenever possible. In makeup, where products sit on top of the skin, alcohol is less of an issue. But in skincare, where products are meant to penetrate and heal, alcohol should be avoided.

Packaging

Packaging plays a significant role in maintaining a product’s effectiveness. As a general rule, products exposed to less air and less contact with your hands will stay potent for longer. Pump bottles and squeeze tubes are ideal for preserving product integrity and are also more travel friendly.

Pots, though iconic, expose the product to air and require dipping your fingers in, which can introduce bacteria and reduce the formula’s effectiveness over time.

Discipline

I know, discipline isn’t everyone’s favorite word, but it’s essential when establishing a consistent skincare routine. Skin operates on roughly a 30-day cycle, so it’s important to give products time to work. This is why it’s critical to stick to a routine—cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting daily to maintain healthy skin.

Skincare is a long-term investment, much like fitness. It won’t keep you young forever, but it will keep you looking refreshed at every age.

Skincare can certainly get more complex, and I’ll dive deeper into the role of active ingredients soon.

Until next time, keep defining beauty on your own terms—you are already beautiful, just as you are.

Anti-Aging is Nonsense!

I’ll admit it—I'm obsessed with skincare. Double-cleansing, sunscreen, moisturizers, and knowing my actives are second nature to me. I visit my injection specialist three times a year, indulge in rejuvenating laser treatments, and cherish keeping my skin looking fresh. Yet, after over 30 years in the beauty industry, I’ve realized: anti-aging is nonsense.

Don’t get me wrong—I’ll always enjoy refreshing my appearance, and I love taking care of my skin. But this passion, even an obsession, stems from decades of conditioning in an industry that glorifies youth. We live in a society where aging is often viewed as something to fight, rather than embrace. The truth is, wisdom and experience have taken a backseat in favor of remaining vibrant, young, and, most disturbingly, relevant.

Today, any visible sign of aging is something to be erased. Young women are turning to Botox to avoid wrinkles before they even appear, while mothers are injecting their teenage daughters to keep them looking forever young. This is a disturbing trend—a fear of aging that shows a profound disconnect from reality.

Aging Used to Be Celebrated

In pre-20th-century cultures, aging was revered. Elders were sought out for their wisdom, and their guidance was celebrated. As children entered puberty, they were often encouraged to grow up faster and embrace maturity.

Then came the 20th century—an era of rapid change. The industrial revolution, cinema, world wars, pandemics, and economic crises all forced generations to mature quickly. The modeling industry of the 1950s reflected this shift, where models in their early thirties, many of whom were former dancers, radiated self-assurance and maturity. Younger women aspired to emulate their elegance and grace.

But by the 1960s, the landscape had shifted dramatically. With the rise of Twiggy, the modeling world—and, by extension, society—shifted its focus to youth. Corporations began marketing to the new generation, and the obsession with youthful appearances was born.

The Evolution of Ageism

As the decades rolled on, ageism crept into every corner of our culture. Women in their 20s were prized for their youth, while men were allowed to grow older gracefully. But by the 21st century, even men weren’t spared from the pressures of ageism.

The 90s gave us the so-called "grandma" Madonna at 33, and the era of the supermodel was in full force. Kate Moss epitomized the appeal of youth, while the rise of reality TV in the 2000s, combined with the advent of social media, meant that everyone was now publicly comparing themselves to one another. Beauty standards became increasingly impossible—frozen foreheads, augmented bodies, and social media feeds filled with altered realities became the new normal.

The Kardashian effect took hold, redefining beauty with hyper-feminine, exaggerated aesthetics. Their influence continues to shape the beauty ideals of a generation. And while these trends have their place, they underscore the constant pressure to look younger, regardless of the cost.

Why “Anti-Aging” is Anti-Life

Here’s the truth: I love neuromodulators, dermal fillers, and laser treatments. They’re tools I use to keep my appearance fresh and rejuvenated. But the term I can’t stand is “anti-aging.”

Aging is a fundamental part of life. To be anti-aging is to be anti-human. The idea that we should fight aging at all costs is flawed—if we never aged, we would remain forever in diapers, incapable of growth or learning. Aging allows us to shed the naivety of youth, to grow into people who have lived, learned, and loved deeply.

Imagine being stuck in your teenage years—forever emotional, constantly hormonal, and endlessly unsure. No, thank you. I’ve lived through adolescence once, and I’m happy to leave it in the past.

Aging is essential. It tells the story of a life well-lived, and while some may choose to wear their wrinkles with pride, others—like me—choose to soften them. Both paths are valid, and it’s a personal choice we each make based on what feels right for us.

Rejuvenation vs. Anti-Aging

There’s a key distinction for me between “anti-aging” and “rejuvenation.” Both terms are used to sell the same products and services, but the language matters.

Anti-aging suggests that aging is something to fear, something to be fought against. It implies that age is a problem to be solved, that growing older means losing value. Rejuvenation, on the other hand, is about renewal. It’s about reinvigorating yourself, not erasing the years but refreshing your spirit.

When I look at my life, I’m grateful for every year I’ve had. I’ve been privileged to live this long—something that not all my friends were fortunate enough to experience. Aging is a gift, and we should cherish it.

Recently, I complimented a woman who had let her natural gray hair come through. It was stunning—like strands of silver in the sun. She told me that the pandemic had encouraged her to let her roots grow in, and she had decided to embrace her natural beauty. That’s the kind of confidence I admire—people who age on their own terms, unapologetically themselves.

Aging on Your Own Terms

As I grow older, I care less about what others think of me. What matters most is how I feel about myself. The opinions of others weigh far less on my mind. My goal is to find contentment within myself and my surroundings.

So, let me say this: do what feels best for you. The only person who should ever dictate how you look is you. And I, for one, will no longer support the idea of anti-aging. It’s time we embrace the privilege of growing older and live life on our own terms—rejuvenated, not erased.

Holy Grail Skincare Products

Today, I feel like sharing some of my holy grail skincare products. These are tried-and-true formulas that I have used for a long time, and I’ve fallen in love with their performance on my skin.

Today, I feel like sharing some of my holy grail skincare products. These are tried-and-true formulas that I have used for a long time, and I’ve fallen in love with their performance on my skin.

I have combination-oily skin, I’m also acne-prone, and my skin gets red easily. This means I’m often searching for products that calm inflammation and treat the occasional breakout.

The first thing I will say is that ingredients matter more to me than brand names or packaging. While ingredients are always important, how they are formulated is equally crucial. This is where the texture, slip, and spread of a product are perfected.

Secondly, remember that more expensive does not equal better results. The reality is that discipline and consistency in caring for your skin will yield far better results than occasional treatments. Think of skincare like working out: the more often you work out, the fitter you become. Your body reflects the choices you make, and your skin operates similarly—just give it the time it needs to improve. You’ll be amazed by the results.

Keep in mind that your skin needs at least 30 days with a product before you can begin to see real changes. Our skin functions on a roughly 28-day cycle, so patience is key.

Another tip: you’ll notice that all the products I’m sharing today are fragrance-free. Fragrance can be irritating to the skin and is unnecessary. While it enhances the sensory experience, it offers no actual benefits for the skin. In fact, fragrances are often protected by proprietary laws, meaning companies don’t have to disclose the chemicals used to create them.

I also avoid skincare products that contain denatured alcohol or just "alcohol" in the ingredients. While alcohol disinfects and keeps the product clean, it’s terrible for oxidizing the skin and promoting damage from free radicals. The higher up alcohol appears on the ingredient list, the higher its concentration in the product.

Favorite Moisturizers

CeraVe – Moisturizing Lotion for Normal to Dry Skin
I discovered CeraVe about eight years ago, and though the clinical packaging didn’t attract me at first, after several recommendations, I gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised by the brand’s wide variety of standout products.
This Moisturizing Lotion is a staple for me. Its simple yet effective formula includes ceramides that help restore the skin’s protective barrier. I love the pump-sized bottle, which contains 355 ml—about seven times what most companies offer for a fraction of the cost. Highly occlusive, non-comedogenic, and always gentle on my skin, I even use it on my feet, as it locks in moisture so well.

Skinfix – Barrier+ Skin Barrier Restoring Gel Cream & Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream
Out of all the higher-end moisturizers I’ve tried over the past 15 years, Skinfix stands out. Based in Canada, Skinfix focuses on restoring the skin's barrier (notice a theme here? Let’s restore our skin’s barrier 😉).
The Barrier+ Skin Barrier Restoring Gel Cream is my go-to during spring and summer. Its lightweight texture absorbs beautifully, keeps my skin clear and moisturized without causing breakouts, and leaves my skin looking plump.
In the fall and winter, I switch to the Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream for extra hydration. It instantly calms redness and provides intense moisture during the colder months.
Both creams come in refillable packaging, which makes them more cost-effective over time. For me, these are some of the few creams that are worth the investment.

Favorite Thermal Water

Uriage – Eau Thermale
A skincare secret I discovered years ago is using thermal water between each step of my routine.
Not only is it incredibly refreshing, but the thermal water is also rich in minerals that your skincare products then seal into the skin, creating a plumped appearance. I use Uriage Eau Thermale religiously, especially to soothe irritated eyes during winter. It’s also excellent for anyone using hyaluronic acid serums—lock in that extra hydration!

Favorite Eye Cream

The INKEY List – Retinol Eye Cream
I’ve been using this eye cream for at least five years, and my under-eye area doesn’t seem to age! So, for anyone who says eye creams don’t work, I beg to differ.
This gentle retinol formula is a powerhouse for rejuvenating the skin around the eyes. It contains shea butter, which moisturizes and locks in hydration. My skin feels plump and smooth after each application, and I love the texture and slip it offers.

Favorite Liquid Exfoliant

Paula’s Choice – Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant
This iconic gray bottle is the best-selling product from Paula’s Choice, and for good reason. The 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is one of the most effective exfoliants I’ve used. It clears out pores without being harsh and leaves the skin hydrated and smooth. I use it every other night, and it gives my skin a gorgeous sheen—perfect for anyone aiming for that glass-skin effect.

Favorite Korean Skincare

COSRX – Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
Choosing a favorite from COSRX was tough since I use several of their products daily. However, I’ve been using the Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence the longest, and it’s a game-changer.
Snail mucin, while unconventional, is an incredible humectant and skin-repairing agent. It retains water and helps repair free-radical damage caused by pollution. I’ve completely replaced hyaluronic acid in my routine with this product—it’s that good.

These are the products I keep repurchasing.

While I initially discovered Skinfix through PR, I’ve become a regular customer.

I am not sponsored by any of these companies; I’m just a fan of their achievements.

Until next time, keep protecting and nourishing your beautiful skin, and remember—define your beauty on your own terms!

Let’s dive into the key beauty trends everyone is buzzing about this season.

As the cool air of fall begins to blow in, we savor the last rays of summer before the season fully transitions. In the world of fashion, fall marks the biggest moment—a return to form, showcasing new trends and directions that will inspire the beauty and fashion landscapes. Let’s dive into the key beauty trends everyone is buzzing about this season.

Luminous Matte Skin

For years, dewy, wet, and luminous finishes have dominated the skin texture scene, with trends like glass skin, glazed donut skin, and wet skin leading the charge. But now, it's time for combination and oily skin types to celebrate—matte skin is making a comeback!

This isn't the heavy, flat matte look of the past. Today’s matte skin is all about balance—hydrating matte foundations that offer buildable, flexible coverage. They move fluidly with the face, avoiding the dreaded heaviness and accumulation in pores or fine lines. Here are a few standout products leading the way:

  • MAC Cosmetics – Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 24HR Matte Foundation + Oil Control
Recently revamped for the modern era, this iconic foundation now features 87% skincare ingredients, including sugar kelp extract, hyaluronic acid, and red algae extract. These elements hydrate the skin while controlling oil production. With medium to full buildable coverage, the formula comes in 67 shades, making it easier than ever to find your perfect match.

  • Estée Lauder – Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation
A timeless classic, Estée Lauder's Double Wear remains a top pick for long-lasting, heat- and sweat-resistant wear. Available in 55 shades with three undertones, it applies quickly, stays true to color, and offers a flawless finish that lasts all day.

Bold Satin & Matte Lips

While summer is all about lip oils, balms, and glosses, fall signals the return of bold, statement lips. With the resurgence of an ‘80s vibe in fashion, rich shades like burgundy, crimson red, and deep raspberries are back in full force. Often paired with a minimal face, the bold lip steals the show this season.

Matte lips are also making a strong comeback. But unlike the drying formulas of the past, these new options offer comfortable wear without sacrificing hydration. Here are a few favorites:

  • MAKE UP FOR EVER – Rouge Artist For Ever
Available in both Satin and Matte finishes, this lipstick delivers bold, comfortable color. The extended red component and triangular tip make precise application easy, especially at the cupid’s bow.

  • NARS – Explicit Refillable Satin Lipstick
These highly pigmented lipsticks glide smoothly and come in a curated range of shades designed to complement all skin tones. Plus, they’re refillable! Exclusive refills are available through NARS' website, giving a sustainable edge to these beautifully packaged lipsticks.

Red Blush, Baby

Continuing the ‘80s nostalgia, red is the must-have blush color this fall. Whether worn softly and diffused or packed on for intensity, red blush is having a major moment. Here are two standout shades:

Lashes, Lashes, Lashes

Lashes are front and center this fall, with false lashes and extensions taking over the runways. Whether you prefer natural or dramatic volume, bold lashes are a must-have. Two mascaras stand out this season:

This fall season is all about bold, confident beauty that’s both comfortable and wearable. From luminous matte skin to striking lips and lashes, there's something for everyone to play with. Remember, makeup is all about having fun and expressing yourself—so explore, experiment, and, above all, make yourself happy.

Until next time, define your beauty on your own terms!

Botox or Dysport? The Neuromodulator Debate

Wrinkles and expression lines have been a universal beauty concern for millennia. Since time immemorial, people have sought a smooth, youthful appearance, free of expression lines. However, the reality of life is that as we age, our faces naturally develop lines and wrinkles. These expression lines form due to the repeated movements of our facial muscles, which create friction on the skin, eventually causing it to fold.

In addition to our facial expressions, our skin is constantly assaulted by external factors like pollution, free radicals, and UV rays. These elements can accelerate the aging process, leading to premature wrinkles and fine lines. The eye area is often the first to show signs of aging due to its delicate skin, and expression lines frequently appear on the forehead.

While some see these lines as adding character—something my mother always reminds me—there's no denying a prevalent double standard in our culture. Since the 1960s, youth has been idealized, especially for women. While men are often celebrated as they age, women are more likely to face ageism. This social reality drives many to seek anti-aging solutions to minimize or erase the appearance of fine lines. Though ageism has historically targeted women, more men are now opting for neuromodulators as well.

Neuromodulators, such as Botox and Dysport, are botulinum neurotoxins that work by temporarily limiting the movement of muscles in the areas where they're injected. These small injections, typically administered on the forehead and around the eyes, smooth out the skin's appearance by relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles. While Botox is more precise and works well in small areas, Dysport tends to spread over larger surfaces, making it ideal for broader regions.

The effects of neuromodulators typically last about three to four months, with the full impact of Botox or Dysport becoming visible approximately two weeks after injection. Over time, consistent use of neuromodulators can significantly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Even when the effects wear off, I've noticed that my skin remains smoother than before.

Neuromodulators are among the most popular non-invasive cosmetic procedures today, offering quick results with minimal downtime. I have been using them for nearly a decade, and I must say, I love how they smooth out my face, erasing worry lines and the signs of stress and anxiety that used to be etched into my skin.

I've been a client at Access Medica in Kirkland, Quebec, since 2016. Despite my significant fear of needles, their specialists have made the process comfortable and reassuring, always working at a pace that suits me. If you're looking for a solution to smooth away some of the worry or distress that shows on your face, neuromodulators could be your winning ticket. The effects start to become noticeable a few days post-treatment, and it's truly wonderful to see years of worry simply fade away.

Until next time, dear reader—stay beautiful!

Concealers Are Key Beauty Fixers

Without a doubt, concealer is one of my favorite cosmetic categories. Concealers are key beauty fixers! A makeup concealer is one of my most essential products for personal use, and it’s definitely one item I love experimenting with. I typically try several concealers every year, and yes, I have thoughts.

Without a doubt, concealer is one of my favorite cosmetic categories. Concealers are key beauty fixers! A makeup concealer is one of my most essential products for personal use, and it’s definitely one item I love experimenting with. I typically try several concealers every year, and yes, I have thoughts.

Please welcome this short list of some of my favorite concealers. These are the ones I find myself gravitating towards currently—some are more recent purchases, while others are die-hard favorites. Let’s explore the concealers that are key beauty fixers together.

Clé de Peau Beauté – The Concealer

This product is sleek, chic, and easy to carry. The coverage is medium to full, and you can apply it directly from the tube, as suggested. However, I have found that using a synthetic and fluffy brush to whisk it on in the inner ocular groove under the eye works wonders and conserves more of the product.

The Clé de Peau Beauté the Concealer comes in a stick format and works best for normal to especially oily skin. The product is blurring and provides excellent coverage. The shade selection does extend, but it is not the most extensive range of skin tones. I felt lucky to find a shade to match myself.

That being said, this has been my true go-to formula for the last year, especially if I need long-lasting coverage with the option to add more throughout the day as needed. This is a self-setting concealer that dries down to a powder-like finish. Elegant, refined, and sans faute—very bougie—it’s a new staple for me.

MAKE UP FOR EVER – HD Skin Concealer

As I have progressed through life, I have learned to appreciate finer textures in concealers—ones that are featherlight and easily buildable, providing an undetectable, realistic skin finish. Look no further than the MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Skin Concealer. It offers 24-hour wear, and its gel-like texture is easy to blend and build. It features ingredients like hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, and snow mushroom to plump the look of fine lines and hydrate the under-eye area.

This concealer helps to brighten the under-eye area and blends seamlessly into the skin. The HD Skin Concealer can be built up to medium coverage and is great for all skin types, giving it incredible versatility. The texture of this concealer lends itself well to being applied with a brush, allowing more precision in the application and making it easier to blend with the skin.

NYX Professional Makeup - Pro Fix Stick Correcting Concealer

Leave it to NYX Professional Makeup to launch another successful concealer. Their Bare With Me Concealer Serum is already a smash hit for drier skin due to its hydrating formula. Now, NYX Professional Makeup has recently launched the Pro Fix Stick Correcting Concealer, and let me tell you, they have another hit on their hands.

This is a creamy stick formula that gives amazing coverage, gliding effortlessly on the skin and mimicking a skin-like texture. The Pro Fix Stick Correcting Concealer also features correcting shades, such as Pink, Green, Dark Peach, Mid Yellow, and more. Available in 22 shades, these impressive concealer sticks pack an impressive amount of moisture, in part due to the hyaluronic acid in their formulation. This concealer is readily available, and best of all, it is inexpensive compared to every other product I have written about in this story.

The NYX Professional Makeup Pro Fix Stick Correcting Concealer is comfortable, breathable, and flexible on the skin. It gives a skin-like, dewy finish, so those of you who prefer matte finishes will want to set it with a powder.

MAC Cosmetics – Pro Longwear Concealer

An OG concealer for me—I have been using this product for 20 years, which says a lot about a concealer, considering how technologies have evolved and how newer formulations and textures have emerged. The MAC Cosmetics Pro Longwear Concealer is another self-setting wonder—a full-coverage concealer that lasts up to 24 hours, is water and humidity-resistant, and sets with a matte finish on the skin.

The only gripe I have is the mini-bottle it comes in: the pumps get dirty, the glass bottles can easily shatter if dropped, and once you have used about 80% of the product, it can get really hard to retrieve the last bit. Beyond that, this product is a sure thing for normal to oily skin; dry skin types may find this way too heavy, so fair warning.

Pro Suggestion: Eye Creams!

Without proper hydration and nourishment, it can be challenging to hide any darkness under the eye area without creating a cakey effect or, worse, accentuating fine lines. Hydration will help add moisture to the area, plumping up the skin and minimizing the appearance of fine lines while softening deeper grooves.

Consider adding active ingredients into your routine, such as niacinamide, vitamin C, retinol, peptides, etc. These ingredients act over time to brighten and revive the under-eye area, smoothing away dryness and making the skin more radiant.

Outro

Concealer is a great tool to hide any unwanted visitors or realities of our current complexion. Are you stressed and overworked, with dark circles from lack of sleep? Concealer! Do you have redness or uneven pigment you want to adjust on your face? Concealer! Did an undesired blemish appear? Concealer!

When you find the right concealer, it’s like having an undetectable best friend who helps you look your best, even when you’re not feeling it. Enjoy the art of redirection and concealing, my dear readers. Until next time, stay beautiful!

This week, I thought I’d share some of my favorite lip products on the blog—lipsticks that slay!

As fall creeps up around the corner, you might be in the market for a new lip color to kick off the season. Let’s look at some of my favorite lipsticks available today, the ones that truly slay!

MAKE UP FOR EVER – Rouge Artist For Ever Satin Hydrating Lipstick
I recently picked up a few shades to test out Make Up For Ever’s reformulated lipsticks, and I’m loving the incredible color selection and the sleek red packaging. The design of the component allows for sharper lines along the cupid’s bow, making for a more precise application. The Rouge Artist For Ever Satin Hydrating Lipstick packs moisture, feels luxurious on the lips, and features a chic design. For those who prefer a matte finish, the Rouge Artist For Ever Long Wearing Matte Lipstick also comes in a wide variety of shades, offering options for different lip textures.

Clé de Peau Beauté – Lipstick and Lipstick Matte
Clé de Peau Beauté masters the luxurious experience with quality pigments, long-lasting colors, and extreme comfort on the lips. Their Lipstick comes in sleek, chic packaging, and the elegance intensifies once applied. The rich colors meld seamlessly with the lips, offering color, comfort, and hydration all at once. This lipstick is an excellent splurge, feeling as exquisite as it looks—a worthy addition to any makeup lover’s collection. Plus, it’s always a graceful moment to use in public for a quick touch-up. Go ahead, get bougie, baby!

MERIT – Signature Lip Lightweight Satin Lipstick
Clean beauty favorite MERIT has been making waves since its launch, and one of their standout successes is the Signature Lightweight Satin Lipstick. The shade "Millennial" has gone particularly viral online, and for good reason. The Signature Lightweight Satin Lipstick feels as light as promised, is hydrating, and the color builds beautifully on the lips. The shade selection leans toward more natural tones, perfectly aligned with the brand’s clean aesthetic. The component itself is a nod to eighties fabulousness and stands out in any collection.

Charlotte Tilbury – K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick
Darling, darling, darling—what can I say? I simply adore the magnificent K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick from Charlotte Tilbury. Don’t let Charlotte’s colorful personality overshadow the brilliance of her high-end products. Her formulations are exceptional, showcasing her artistry. The K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick is another iconic product from Charlotte Tilbury, with a creamy texture that dries down to a satin finish. The pigment stays true on the lips, offering comfort and impressive staying power. The K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick comes in a beautiful range of nudes and reds that are always flattering, perfect for any occasion—whether it’s red carpet glamour or a simple day look, Charlotte has you covered.

Fun Fact: Many lipsticks can double as a cream blush in a pinch, allowing you to create an instantly harmonious makeup look. I recommend rubbing the lipstick on your fingers to warm up the texture, then gently patting the product onto clean skin or over makeup, as preferred.

I hope you find your perfect pout paint-stick this season. There’s nothing more chic and fabulous than a new lipstick to adopt a fresh vibe and attitude for the fall.

May you find the perfect lipstick to slay!

Until next time, stay beautiful!

Getting that Golden Glow

Summer is all about that golden glow. Whether you’re basking in the sun’s rays or fiercely protecting your skin, it’s inevitable that your skin will gain some color during the season—it’s natural. Often, that golden hue gives the skin a more alive and even appearance, with most skin tones deepening—some becoming rosier, while others turn golden as the initial redness fades.

However, maintaining that golden glow can be tricky, especially as we wash our faces frequently, causing our summer color to fade first on our faces. Thankfully, there are countless bronzers on the market to help us achieve that perfect sun-kissed complexion, keeping our golden glow intact without compromising our skin.

Here are a few of my current favorite bronzers available now. These bronzing powders will help you achieve that sun-kissed skin, without any damage:

Gucci – Poudre de Beauté Éclat Soleil Bronzing Powder
This stunning compact powder is a luxurious addition to any beauty routine. The exquisite fragrance adds an extra touch of bougie appeal that I can’t resist. I always apply it with a brush for an even finish. Available in five shades, this product may not cater to darker skin tones, so some might need to look elsewhere for a perfect match. However, the Sun-Kissed Glow Bronzer from Gucci is an ultimate splurge, and one I’m thrilled to have made.

NARS – Laguna Talc-Free Bronzer Powder
When a celebrated makeup artist creates their own line, it’s always a big deal. NARS has maintained its status with innovative launches and a focus on new, talc-free formulas for all its powders, ushering in a renaissance for the brand. The Laguna Talc-Free Bronzer Powder is richly pigmented and applies beautifully to the skin. It’s easy to control the color payoff and build intensity, making it a dream to work with. I loved layering it gradually to warm up the face I was working on.

MAKE UP FOR EVER – Artist Longwear Skin-Fusing Matte Powder Bronzer
MAKE UP FOR EVER has been reformulating all its powder products to be talc-free, and this newest bronzer is a standout addition to their already stellar lineup. The Artist Longwear Skin-Fusing Matte Powder Bronzer has excellent pigmentation that spreads effortlessly, allowing you to build up or tone down the color as needed. The shades have a hint of rosiness, giving a freshly sun-kissed effect. The sturdy metal compacts allow the powders to be removed and added to an existing palette, perfect for artists who travel with multiple shades.

ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starr – Made for Shade Bronze & Sculpt Trio Palette
These powders launched some time ago, and I have to say, I absolutely love playing with this product. Highly pigmented, each compact offers three variations within its shade family, with differences becoming more pronounced in the deeper tones. While this formula does contain talc—something I always like to mention—the way it applies to the skin is incredibly fluid and smooth. The large, shiny red compact is a statement piece, and with three large pans of bronzer, it’s lasted me forever with no signs of hitting pan.

Wonderblush – Le Hâle Bronzing Powder
Based in my hometown of Montréal, Wonderblush is a brand I’m incredibly proud of. Launched in the fall of 2023, Wonderblush has already made a name for itself with a series of elegant, high-performance products, made locally, at an affordable luxury price. Currently available in two shades, Le Hâle Bronzing Powder is a new must-have for makeup artists and enthusiasts alike. The simple, streamlined compact has a satisfying snap when you close it, and while packaging isn’t everything, the practical elegance of Wonderblush stands out. Just wait until you see their blush colors!

I hope you enjoy this selection of bronzers to achieve that perfect golden, sun-kissed complexion. Stay lively, stay sunny, and glow golden as you soak up the sun—but don’t forget your sunscreen!

Until next time, stay beautiful!

Sun Screening in the Summertime

If you know me, you know that I preach about the benefits of effective sunscreen. I wasn't always so meticulous with my suncare routine. For many years, I allowed the sun to color my skin, chasing that ever-elusive golden complexion. However, as I became more interested in rejuvenating my skin and brightening my complexion, I started using sunscreen daily. After witnessing its incredible properties firsthand, I am now a true believer and appreciator of its capacity to protect the skin from free radicalization and the accumulation of the signs of time.

The higher the Sun Protection Factor (SPF), the more efficient the product is in preventing skin damage. In my opinion, it's always better to layer your sun protection separately from your moisturizing or makeup products. Treat sunscreen as its own entity. Many foundations and moisturizers on the market include SPF. However, since the SPF is integrated into another product, you don't get as much protection as you would from an SPF product designed solely for sun protection. Essentially, you'd need to wear a ton of foundation or moisturizer to get adequate sun protection from the SPF included in the product.

I know that many sunscreens can be difficult to work with, so I thought I would round up a few that I enjoy using. These products are makeup-friendly, so you can rest assured that they won’t mess up your makeup.

Neutrogena – Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion Sunscreen SPF 50 Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB

A mouthful for sure, this sunscreen launched several years ago to rave reviews, and I can personally attest to its popularity. It remains my holy grail among drugstore brands. The Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion Sunscreen gives the skin a great supplement of moisture. In the hot summer months, it can double as your moisturizer. This sunscreen has no white cast, but please note that the finish is very dewy. If you love glass skin, this doubles as a makeup primer.

Shiseido – Ultra Sun Protector Lotion Sunscreen SPF 50

Shiseido has been making incredible beauty products since 1872. This luxury brand creates exceptionally refined products that feel luxurious on the skin. The Ultra Sun Protector Lotion Sunscreen SPF 50 is a favorite of mine. It also doubles well as a primer and provides tremendous moisture. I found it gave a slight golden glow to my skin, leaving it looking moist and plumped up.

Ultra Violette – Supreme Hydrating Facial Screen SPF 50

My latest discovery, this sunscreen applies smoothly and feels very hydrating on the skin. I have worn this under makeup and on top of my skincare, and it does not disappoint. The Ultra Violette Supreme Hydrating Facial Screen SPF 50 packs a wallop of moisture, so expect a glowy appearance on your skin that lasts for hours.

La Roche-Posay – Anthelios Ultra-Fluid SPF 50+ Facial Sunscreen

This sunscreen is oil-free, super lightweight, and leaves a matte finish on the skin. The Anthelios Ultra-Fluid SPF 50+ Facial Sunscreen is water and sweat resistant for the first 80 minutes after application, making it ideal for working out or having fun in the sun. This sunscreen is lightweight and works well under makeup or on clean skin, offering versatile sun protection that adapts to any skin type.

Sun protection is a must in our day and age, as unprotected sun exposure can lead to discolorations and cause wrinkles to form prematurely. Remember to apply and reapply during the day, as protection fades every two hours or so.

Until next time, dear beauty reader, stay beautiful!

Blushing Beauty

Your blush is blushing beauty! Blush is having a moment; it is currently one of the best-selling items in cosmetics, and everyone and their momma is launching a blush these days. The market is flooded with blushing beauty tools to flush our cheeks and slay that healthy-looking skin.
Blush has always been one of my weaknesses, and I likely have more blushes than I will ever use. Here is a list of a few of my favorite blushing beauties.

MAKE UP FOR EVER – Artist Longwear Skin-Fusing Powder Blush: This latest powder blush features a new, talc-free, gel-based, skin-fusing technology that bonds with the skin to help the pigment remain longer on the skin. A lovely assortment of colors and textures are available, and blushes are transferrable into a custom palette should one desire. Great pigment mixed with technological innovation, MAKE UP FOR EVER hits it out of the ballpark yet again.

Saie – Dew Blush Blendable Liquid Blush: Saie has been making waves in the Clean Beauty space, and this liquid blush shows off the impact on the market. Easy to blend, this liquid blush comes with a doe-foot applicator and can be blended with brushes, fingers, or a sponge with ease. Bright and vibrant color and muted tones enhance the complexion and give the skin life.

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna – Cheeks Out Freestyle Cream Blush: Say what you want about celebrity brands, though most are unabashed money scams in my opinion, Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty is a stand-out! My success rate with their products is high, and when I tried the Cheeks Out Freestyle Cream Blush, I loved its pigment and blendability. Use it alone on the skin, over or under your foundation; this product blends easily, does not disrupt other products, and plays well with other products and brands.

RMS Beauty – ReDimension Hydra Powder Blush: Normally, I steer clear of glowy, reflective, or metallic blushes. My skin has some texture from acne, and though I have had treatments and laser treatments, I am usually more prone to matte or satiny textures for my cheeks. The level of hydration in this luminous blush is unparalleled. I have found that it does not accentuate my texture in an unflattering way as it diffuses the appearance of my skin and gives it the most lustrous radiance. A blush topper like no other, this product is a showstopper!

NARS – Talc-Free Powder Blush: NARS has been making incredible blushes for decades now and has long been a reference in both lip colors and blush colors. The recently reformulated version is, of course, as its title suggests, completely talc-free. This new texture glides well and builds up pigment well, blending beautifully on the skin. Of course, the legendary colors are all omnipresent; however, NARS has a lovely mix of subtle and bold shades to choose from.

Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez – Soft Pinch Liquid Blush: I know, I know, I just wrote that I don’t like celebrity brands, and here is another one. However, the quality of the product and the relatively accessible price point make me include this liquid blush here. The first time I tried it, a simple drop on each cheek was more than enough, and the size of the bottle ensures many days of blushing, beautiful cheeks. It glides well on top of liquid and cream products, just as well as it does on clean skin. Trying it over a powder and it still blends out beautifully, truly a well-designed product. Trying it helps you to understand its virality online.

Choosing favorites today was a little tricky as I truly love all of my blushes. Hopefully, one of these blushes will transform you into your very own, blushing beauty. Stay gorgeous, sending you good vibes and reminders of sunscreen!

Dewy Skin Is In

Let us face it: wet, luminous, glazed, and glossy complexions are all the rage! From Maison Margiela’s extremely reflective makeups in their Spring/Summer 2024 Couture runway show to the endless glassy complexions we see in the media every day, there has never been a better moment to let your skin shine.

Here are a few quick tips:

Skin Type: If you have oily skin, many fine lines, or uneven texture, these types of products can enhance and amplify your skin's texture. Combination skin types will likely love the glow if they powder the center of their faces.

Placement: Light reflective products look beautiful on the cheekbones, forehead, and any smooth part of the skin.

Products: There are many products on the market right now to help you get your glow on. Here are a few of my current favorites:

·        Charlotte Tilbury – Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint Hydrating Foundation Stick: The most recent launch in this list, I got this to test out for my annual Clin d’oeil judging panel box of goodies. I didn’t think I would enjoy it, but I love it. It’s super smooth and blends effortlessly. I avoid it in the T-zone area. It’s a hybrid product: some will love it as a glowy foundation, for others, it will be a highlighting stick.

·        Saie Beauty – Glowy Super Gel Lightweight Dewy Multipurpose Illuminator: This luminous gel is an incredible and easy-to-use product to wear on the face or body to give the skin much-needed radiance. The texture is super fluid and works well on top of other products. I have often used this on top of other products or even mixed within to give the skin a more illuminated effect.

·        Glow Recipe – Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops Serum: This serum packs a hydrating punch that doubles as an excellent primer for makeup to give your skin that radiance without any shimmer. Purely glossy, this product looks incredible on the skin alone or under makeup. This product has gained cult status and for good reason: it is a wonder, a beautiful hybrid of skincare and makeup.

·        MAKE UP FOR EVER – Mist & Fix 24HR Hydrating Setting Spray: How could I not include one of my favorite brands in the mix here? This setting spray has become a favorite of mine since it was relaunched a few years back. Packed with hyaluronic acid to retain moisture, this setting spray refreshes the makeup and holds it in place while leaving the skin looking marvelously moist. It works wonders as a setting spray and can become a quick primer with grip action if you spray it prior to applying makeup.

·        MAC Cosmetics – Studio Radiance Moisturizing + Illuminating Silky Primer: MAC has been killing it for years in the complexion department, and this primer, launched in 2023, is no exception. It helps products to grip and spread better on the skin, giving the skin the most gorgeous luminous and dewy finish. Wear it under a matte foundation and watch it breathe new life into your complexion. A new must-have in my kit, I am already on my second tube.

Hopefully, some of these suggestions can be of service to you, dear beauty reader. Until next time, stay beautiful and take care of yourself!
