Skincare Glossary of Active Ingredients

Hydrators & Moisturizers

  1. Hyaluronic Acid: A humectant that attracts and retains moisture in the skin, making it plump and hydrated. Great for all skin types, especially dehydrated skin.

  2. Glycerin: Another humectant that draws water into the skin, promoting hydration and skin barrier repair.

  3. Ceramides: Lipids naturally found in the skin that help maintain the skin’s barrier, prevent moisture loss, and protect against external irritants.

  4. Squalane: A lightweight oil that mimics the skin’s natural oils, helping to moisturize without clogging pores.

Exfoliants

  1. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs):

    • Glycolic Acid: Derived from sugarcane, it exfoliates the outer layer of dead skin cells to reveal smoother, more even-toned skin. Great for dullness, fine lines, and uneven texture.

    • Lactic Acid: A gentler AHA derived from milk that exfoliates and hydrates. Suitable for sensitive skin.

  2. Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA):

    • Salicylic Acid: Oil-soluble, it penetrates pores to exfoliate and reduce acne by preventing clogged pores. Ideal for oily and acne-prone skin.

  3. Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs): Larger molecules than AHAs, offering gentle exfoliation without irritation. Suitable for sensitive skin.

Rejuvenation

  1. Retinol (Vitamin A): A powerful ingredient that speeds up cell turnover, stimulates collagen production, and reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Can cause irritation, so it should be introduced gradually.

  2. Peptides: Short chains of amino acids that act as building blocks for proteins like collagen and elastin. They help strengthen the skin's structure and reduce wrinkles.

  3. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): A multitasker that strengthens the skin barrier, improves elasticity, evens skin tone, controls oil production, and soothes inflammation. Suitable for all skin types.

Brighteners

  1. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): An antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals, brightens the complexion, and helps fade hyperpigmentation. It also stimulates collagen production.

  2. Arbutin: A natural brightening agent that inhibits melanin production, helping to fade dark spots and even skin tone.

  3. Kojic Acid: Derived from fungi, it lightens dark spots and evens out pigmentation.

  4. Licorice Extract: A plant-derived ingredient that helps reduce hyperpigmentation and soothes irritation.

Antioxidants

  1. Vitamin E (Tocopherol): A powerful antioxidant that protects against environmental damage and supports skin repair. Often paired with Vitamin C for enhanced stability and effectiveness.

  2. Ferulic Acid: An antioxidant that stabilizes and boosts the effects of Vitamin C and Vitamin E in serums, providing stronger protection against environmental damage.

  3. Green Tea Extract: Contains polyphenols that act as antioxidants, helping to protect the skin from environmental damage and soothe inflammation.

Anti-Acne

  1. Benzoyl Peroxide: A potent acne-fighting ingredient that kills acne-causing bacteria and helps clear clogged pores. Can be drying, so it’s important to moisturize.

  2. Sulfur: Helps reduce oiliness and unclog pores, making it effective in treating acne and breakouts.

Soothing & Calming

  1. Aloe Vera: Known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, it helps calm irritated skin and promotes healing.

  2. Centella Asiatica (Cica): A plant extract that helps soothe, heal, and protect the skin’s barrier. Ideal for sensitive or irritated skin.

  2. Titanium Dioxide: Another mineral sunscreen that protects against UV rays, often used in combination with zinc oxide.

Skin Barrier Repair
